Answers, and the rule behind each one

  1. 1. E — 4. Rule: use the pattern, not just the numbers. 10 is 3 more than 7, so the answer is 4 rather than 1.
  2. 2. C — 5. Rule: two steps, in order. 14 − 8 is 6. Then 6 − 1 is 5.
  3. 3. B — 192. Rule: multiply by 2, then add 6. 138 times 2 is 276, plus 6 makes 282. 93 times 2 is 186, plus 6 makes 192.
  4. 4. C — 277. Rule: multiply by 3, then add 7. 74 times 3 is 222, plus 7 makes 229. 90 times 3 is 270, plus 7 makes 277.
  5. 5. D — 269. Rule: multiply by 4, then add 5. 8 times 4 is 32, plus 5 makes 37. 66 times 4 is 264, plus 5 makes 269.
  6. 6. B — 199. Rule: multiply by 4, then add 3. 56 times 4 is 224, plus 3 makes 227. 49 times 4 is 196, plus 3 makes 199.
  7. 7. D — 215. Rule: add, then subtract, then add again. The pattern adds 39, then subtracts 5, and repeats.
  8. 8. A — 37. Rule: divide by the same amount each time. Each number is the one before it divided by 2.
  9. 9. A — 55. Rule: two steps, in order. 33 + 39 is 72. Then 72 − 17 is 55.
  10. 10. C — 864. Rule: multiply by the same amount each time. Each number is 2 times the one before it.
