Answers, and the rule behind each one

  1. 1. E — sky. Rule: where something belongs. A mouse is found in the hole. A plane is found in the sky, the same way.
  2. 2. D — carrot. Rule: they are all vegetables. Potato, pea and bean are all vegetables. Carrot belongs with them for the same reason.
  3. 3. E — hive. Rule: where something belongs. A bird is found in the nest. A bee is found in the hive, the same way.
  4. 4. D — cut. Rule: a thing and what it does. A spade is what you dig with. A scissors is what you cut with, the same way.
  5. 5. D — jump. Rule: they are all ways of moving. Run, hop and skip are all ways of moving. Jump belongs with them for the same reason.
  6. 6. E — kitchen. Rule: a part and its whole. A roof is one part of a house. An oven is one part of a kitchen in the same way.
  7. 7. E — asked. Rule: what the first part makes happen. Being puzzled is the clue — that is why they asked.
  8. 8. C — table. Rule: they are all furniture. Bed, desk and chair are all furniture. Table belongs with them for the same reason.
  9. 9. E — because. Rule: the joining word. The second half of the sentence gives the reason for the first half, and "because" is the word that gives a reason.
  10. 10. D — yawned. Rule: what the first part makes happen. Being sleepy is the clue — that is why they yawned.
