Answers, and the rule behind each one

  1. 1. B — melt. Rule: the word that is really true of it. Candles melt when they are lit — that is the one that is really true of them.
  2. 2. A — sweat. Rule: something and what it causes. Onion causes tears. Exercise causes sweat, the same way.
  3. 3. D — crawl. Rule: they are all ways of moving. Jump, skip and run are all ways of moving. Crawl belongs with them for the same reason.
  4. 4. A — shoes. Rule: they all come in pairs. Ears, gloves and socks are all things that come in pairs. Shoes belongs with them for the same reason.
  5. 5. C — sweat. Rule: something and what it causes. Tickle causes giggles. Exercise causes sweat, the same way.
  6. 6. C — hail. Rule: they are all kinds of weather. Wind, thunder and fog are all weather. Hail belongs with them for the same reason.
  7. 7. E — finished. Rule: what "even though" tells you. "Although" warns you that something surprising comes next. The book was very long, and she read all of it in a day.
  8. 8. E — shadows. Rule: something and what it causes. Tickle causes giggles. Sun causes shadows, the same way.
  9. 9. B — then. Rule: the joining word. One thing happened and the next one followed, so the word that joins them is "then".
  10. 10. E — gulp. Rule: a small one and a big one. A breeze is a small gale. A sip is a small gulp, the same way.
