Answers, and the rule behind each one
- 1. B — gale. Rule: a small one and a big one. A whisper is a small shout. A breeze is a small gale, the same way.
- 2. D — then. Rule: the joining word. One thing happened and the next one followed, so the word that joins them is "then".
- 3. E — damage. Rule: something and what it causes. Onion causes tears. Flood causes damage, the same way.
- 4. A — lamp. Rule: they all give out light. Torch, candle and star are all things that give light. Lamp belongs with them for the same reason.
- 5. E — stool. Rule: they all have legs. Chair, horse and spider are all things with legs. Stool belongs with them for the same reason.
- 6. C — sprint. Rule: a small one and a big one. A pebble is a small boulder. A jog is a small sprint, the same way.
- 7. B — caught. Rule: what "even though" tells you. "Even though" warns you that something surprising comes next. The bus was late, and we were there for the start anyway.
- 8. D — candle. Rule: they all give out light. Bonfire, torch and lamp are all things that give light. Candle belongs with them for the same reason.
- 9. A — sprint. Rule: a small one and a big one. A murmur is a small roar. A jog is a small sprint, the same way.
- 10. A — jumped. Rule: what "even though" tells you. "Even though" warns you that something surprising comes next. The water was freezing, and the swimmers jumped straight in anyway.
