Gifted screening in Canada

In Canada, school boards screen for gifted programs, most often with the CCAT-7 — the Canadian edition of the CogAT — in grade 3 or 4. Our guides cover Ontario’s boards in detail.

The tests in Canada

  • CCAT-7

Canadian Cognitive Abilities Test, 7th edition

    Fully covered

Canadian school boards, usually as a whole-class screener in grade 3 or 4.

  • CAT4

    Cognitive Abilities Test, 4th edition

    Mostly covered

Schools in the UK and many international and British-curriculum schools.

How it works

  • Boards decide who is screened, with which test and in which grade. Many Ontario boards screen every child in grade 3 or 4.
  • A screening score usually leads to a second step — often an individual assessment — before a child is identified.
