The NSW Opportunity Class test, explained for parents
The Opportunity Class Placement Test is how children in Year 4 in New South Wales apply for a Year 5 opportunity class: a class for high-potential and gifted students in a public primary school.

- On a computer: Reading (40 minutes), Mathematical Reasoning (40 minutes) and Thinking Skills (30 minutes), all multiple choice.
Three parts, on a computer
- Reading: 40 minutes.
- Mathematical Reasoning: 40 minutes.
- Thinking Skills: 30 minutes. The department’s practice tests show logic questions about arguments, spatial questions, and sequence and puzzle problems.
- There is no writing test for opportunity classes. It is taken on computers the department provides, at a local test centre.
When
- In Year 4, in May. For 2027 entry it was held on 8 and 9 May 2026, with a make-up day on 22 May.
- From 2026 the test is held only in NSW.
Preparing, the official way
- The department publishes three practice tests, with answers and explanations, on its “Get ready” page.
Grades and Years
- The puzzles on this site and in the app count in North American grades; Year 4 in NSW is grade 4.
How much of the NSW OC test the puzzles here cover
Partly covered. Thinking Skills includes sequence, puzzle and spatial questions, which the puzzles here practise. Its logic questions about arguments, and the reading and maths sections, are not covered.
