Opportunity class and selective school tests in Australia
In New South Wales, children in Year 4 sit the Opportunity Class Placement Test for a Year 5 opportunity class, and children in Year 6 sit the Selective High School Placement Test. Victoria’s selective entry high schools take students into Year 9.

Opportunity Class Placement Test
Children in Year 4 in New South Wales applying for a Year 5 opportunity class.
New South Wales
- Opportunity class (Year 5 entry): Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills, on a computer, in May of Year 4.
- Selective high school (Year 7 entry): the same three parts plus Writing, in May of Year 6.
- The Department of Education runs both, and publishes practice tests with answers.
Victoria
- Four selective entry high schools take about 1,000 students into Year 9 each year. Students sit the entrance exam in Year 8; in 2026 it was on 20 June.
- The exam looks at higher-order thinking, problem solving, reasoning, comprehension and interpretation, with nothing beyond the Year 8 curriculum.
Years and grades
- The puzzles here count in North American grades. In NSW and Victoria, Year 4 is grade 4.
