Halton (HDSB) invites every Grade 4 student to take the CCAT-7, a group reasoning test in three sections, in October. It is scored by the publisher, Nelson; a copy of the results goes home in late November, and selected students continue in the gifted screening process.

Step by step

  1. 1

    The CCAT-7 · October

All Grade 4 students are invited to take it. It has three sections — verbal, quantitative and non-verbal — given on three separate days in person.

  2. 2

    Results · Late November

Results go to the classroom teacher, the special education resource teacher (SERT) and the principal, are placed in the Ontario Student Record, and a copy is sent home.

  3. 3

    Further screening

Selected students continue in the gifted screening process. A student who isn’t in Grade 4 can be referred through the school’s SERT.

Where it leads

  • Halton’s placements for identified students are decided at an IPRC. Ask your school’s SERT for this year’s options.

Can you practise for it?

Halton’s screening page asks only for a good night’s sleep and breakfast, and says no extra studying or review is needed.

Cub Climb is a set of original reasoning puzzles with words, numbers and pictures, from kindergarten to grade 5: a child finds the answer, then names the rule. It is not a copy of any test and makes no promise about results.
