Spell Cub
Privacy
Shared lists live on our server. Nothing about your child that we can read leaves their device. Last updated 7 November 2026.
The short version
- No accounts, no sign-up and no login, for a grown-up or a child.
- Our server keeps the spelling lists grown-ups share, never anything about a child.
- A child’s practice, progress and misses are kept on their own device.
- No ads, no analytics, no tracking scripts, and no third-party code on any Spell Cub page.
- No IP addresses are stored, in our app or in our hosting logs.
What our server keeps
- The list
- The class name the grown-up typed, the grade, American or Canadian spelling, the test day, each week’s words and group names, and the sentences we read them in.
- A key to edit it
- Kept only as a scrambled hash. The key itself stays on the device of the grown-up who made the list.
- Anonymous class totals
- Only when the class has counts on: how many devices practised a week’s list, how many words were tried, which were right first time, and the misspellings made, added up for the class. No name, no device ID, nothing that says which child.
- Reports
- If someone reports a list, the reason they picked and the time. Nothing about who reported it.
- Spoken words
- The audio of each word and sentence, made by Microsoft Azure’s voice service on our server. A child’s device never talks to Azure; it only plays the finished clip.
A list is written by a grown-up, about spelling words. Please don’t put a child’s name in a class name or a group name.
What stays on your child’s device
Which words your child knows, the ones they missed, the days they practised and their settings, saved in the browser’s own storage (or the app’s, once it is out). Clearing the browser’s data for cubclimb.ca deletes it. We never receive it, so there is nothing for us to delete on our side.
How long we keep it
- Lists and their totals
- Deleted on 30 September after the school year of the list’s last week.
- Reports
- Deleted after 90 days.
- Spoken words
- Kept, because they are only words and sentences and are shared by every class that uses them.
Where it is kept
On Google Cloud in Montréal, Canada (Firestore, Cloud Storage and Cloud Run). The site itself is served by Firebase Hosting.
Children
Spell Cub is for children aged 6 to 11, and is built so that it collects no personal information from them. That is why there are no accounts, and why a child’s results never come to us. If you think a list includes something about a child, write to us and we will remove it.
Questions, or a list to take down
Write to support@cubclimb.ca with the class link. A person reads every message.
